The state of affairs.
Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) has already been recognised as one of the Medical Subspecialties by the Medical Profession Development Section, Medical Development Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia due to the needs and benefits elaborated above. The subspecialty training programme commenced in 2010.
As of 2022, there are 17 acute internal medicine physicians in Malaysia and 9 trainees.
In fact, the direction and consolidation of the AIM services and other medical subspecialties within the Ministry, for 2022 - 2030, was discussed and presented at Mesyuarat Hala Tuju dan Pemantapan Kepakaran Dan Subkepakaran Perkhidmatan Perubatan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) 2022, 9 – 11 Ogos at the Movenpick Hotel & Convention Centre, KLIA, Sepang.
The current status of Acute Internal Medicine service, in comparison to other medical subspecialties, in the Ministry of Health of Malaysia is summarised in the figure below (item 9):
Advanced Acute Internal medicine service exists currently in Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Kelantan.
Resident Acute Internal Medicine in Hospital Umum Sarawak in 2024/2025.
Resident Acute Internal Medicine in HQE1 Sabah, Hospital Bukit Mertajam Pulau Pinang, Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah Muar Johor in 2025/2026.
